Meet Steffy McCourt
Steffy McCourt is a middle school ELA teacher, writer, and curriculum creator with more than 20 years of classroom experience. She currently teaches 7th and 8th grade English Language Arts in Michigan and serves as advisor for her school’s digital student news magazine.
Steffy is a National Writing Project Fellow and has written extensively about education, travel, and family life. She is the creator of Efficient ELA, where she shares practical teaching strategies, AI tools, and classroom resources that help ELA teachers save time while maintaining meaningful learning experiences. Outside the classroom, Steffy is a mom of three boys and enjoys writing, reading, traveling throughout Michigan, and cheering from the sidelines at sporting events.
We asked Steffy to share her ideas and priorities for creating ELA resources.
When you’re creating resources, what do you always keep in mind?
I always think about the student who isn’t sure how to get started. I want my materials to provide enough structure to build confidence without taking away students’ independence, creativity, or voice. Middle schoolers are capable of incredibly thoughtful work when we give them clear, accessible pathways into it.
What can teachers expect every time they use one of your resources?
Teachers can count on resources that are practical, classroom-tested, and ready to use. After more than two decades in the classroom, I know teachers don’t need more “stuff”—they need tools that actually make teaching easier. Everything I create is designed to save teachers time while helping students think, talk, read, and write more deeply.
