What you need:
Renewal of your professional certificate in the classroom teaching service requires 100 CTLEs every five years. Individuals with a professional certificate in educational leadership service or a teaching assistant level III certificate will also require CTLEs.
Importantly, you do NOT need 100 hours per certification. So, if you hold multiple certificates, you only need to complete a total of 100 hours for all your certificates.
How to earn your hours:
You must choose courses that are pre-approved by NYSED. This means that only approved CTLE sponsors can provide coursework that comes with an associated CTLE certificate for you to use in your certificate renewal. You can find the pre-approved sponsor list on the NYSED website here: https://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/resteachers/ctlesponsors.html
Model Teaching is an approved CTLE sponsor with NYSED. We offer individual courses or bundle courses for a low-cost way to earn your CTLEs in one place. Every 1 PD hour of coursework with Model Teaching is equivalent to 1 CTLE. With over 500 hours of coursework to choose from, you have many options to fulfill your requirements through Model teaching. Find out more about our courses and course bundle options.
What type of training can you take?
Since Model Teaching is an approved CTLE sponsor, online courses through Model Teaching quality for CTLEs, and all 100 hours of coursework can be completed on our platform, if you wish. College and graduate-level coursework may also apply, but only if the institution is an approved CTLE sponsor.
More specific information about approved CTLE activities can be found here: https://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/resteachers/ctle-acceptable.html
NYSED requires that your coursework be focused on one of three areas:
- Content area(s) of the certificate(s) held,
and/or
and
- Language Acquisition addressing the needs of English language learners.
Language acquisition coursework is a requirement for your recertification. For ESOL and bilingual teachers, 50% of your coursework must be focused on language acquisition. Other teachers, school district leaders, school building leaders, and teaching assistants level II must complete 15% of coursework, or 15 CTLEs.
You can find out more about the NYSED Language Acquisition requirements and acceptable language acquisition activities here: https://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/resteachers/ctle-language-acquisition.html
